Leo was stunned at her words. A divorce? Was she kidding? Did she really think he was going to tell her such rubbish only weeks from their child’s birth?

God, did she not realise how utterly in love with her he was? How he didn’t see other women because she’d ruined him for anyone but her? No one smiled the way she did, nor caused his heart to flip, or even roused his temper the way only she could. For him there was no one else, but obviously she no longer trusted what he said. All his fault and his problem to mend.

Tonight he’d waited before searching Gila out. His concentration refusing to settle on the work papers he’d tried to bury himself in after their earlier conversation. The memory of his palm placed over their growing child, and the delightful shock when the baby kicked, one he would always treasure.

But a feeling of unfinished business remained since they’d parted. A strong sense that there was so much more to share. Now he’d finally started to open up to Gila and admit the secrets in his heart, he yearned to get it all out. To tell her everything and let her hear exactly what he’d tried to protect her from and why. Why now when he couldn’t before, he didn’t know, but it just felt time to at least try.

How could they find a pathway towards any honest future, no matter how they raised their child, if the prior secrets still clung and stuck to him with the same tenacity of a rampant vine intent on smothering everything? Wasn’t it crucial to expose and deal with the past for good if they hoped to rebuild?

Deciding to get the conversation started, because circling around sent them in the wrong direction and hurt Gila unnecessarily, Leo gathered his courage. He saw the clear desire to run in his wife’s guarded wary gaze, but gently drew her towards him, until her body stopped next to his. The curve of her stomach nestling against his flat one. Cupping her cheek, he whispered, ‘You think I want a divorce?’

‘Don’t you?’ she stammered. ‘Don’t you want to finish everything with me and start again?’

‘No, my darling. Besides we’ll never be finished when we share a child.’

Or while every part of my heart still belongs to you.

He shook his head and insisted, ‘I don’t want a divorce. Why would you think I would?’

She shrugged and flushed. ‘I don’t know. I suppose it came into my head when you said you wanted to talk. I thought that maybe you’d met someone.’

‘Well, please allow that thought to leave because there’s no one else I’m interested in and any decision we make about divorcing can wait.’

‘Good,’ she said shakily.

Leo smiled and probed, ‘Good?’

She stiffened and glanced away. ‘Well, yes. Separation can be hard without other people becoming involved and confusing things. Or so others say.’

His thumb gently caressed the corner of her mouth. ‘I get that you’re not ready to hear that you’re the only one I want because I’ve hurt you.
